The World Health Organization highly recommends breastfeeding your baby for the first 6 months, because it is crucial for achieving optimal growth, development and health. You’re encouraged to start incorporating solid foods such as fruits and vegetables throughout the next 6 months while continuing to breastfeed. Breastfeeding not only benefits your baby because breast milk contains all the necessary vitamins and nutrients your baby needs, but it also has antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria. In addition, breastfeeding lowers your baby’s chances of having asthma, allergies or getting ear infections. Breastfed infants are also more likely to gain the right amount of weight as they grow, helping them to avoid gaining weight as they age.
Breastfeeding has many health benefits for the mother, including reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and postpartum depression. As a bonus, you’ll burn extra calories — aiding you in losing pregnancy weight faster. Breastfeeding allows you and your baby to have a regular time throughout the day where they can relax quietly together as they bond with each other.
